New Field Music

It turns out Field Music's hiatus hasn't lasted indefinitely.  After stints with School of Language and The Week That Was, it seems as if the Brewis brothers are back at it.  They have announced the track list to a 20 song album to be released in February.

It also seems that they are coming back to the States after a disappointing (for us DC folks) tour a few years ago.  They have dates in March, but none in DC.  Check them out here.

And for your veiwing pleasure, a new music video.

Field Music - "Them That Do Nothing"

Anyone interested in carpooling to NYC on 3/23?

And the Moment You've All Been Waiting For... UPDATE

The Rockist Society formally endorses Neil Young for President.

Yeah, we know he's Canadian.

Neil Young / Bruce Springsteen - "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World"

Don't forget to vote (although I think it's impossible to not remember).

UPDATE:

Friends sent these to me and they were too good to pass up.

Coco Tea - "Barack Obama"

"Obama Is Beautiful World!"

New XYZ Video, EP

The XYZ Affair - "Evening Life"

Those pants are fantastically slim and Alex's moves are fantastically smooth. Bones seems pretty light on his feet, especially at the end of the video.

You can stream the new EP on their website. To go behind the music, check this out.

This Week in Video: Hairy, Tattooed Guys Singing Pretty Songs Edition

It's resurrection time. Since I'm the only Rockist currently in DC yet the 2nd most frequent poster, it's time to get serious...

Speaking of serious: does anyone else find the first 30 seconds of this video creepy? C'mon, a kid in the middle of nowhere gets into a dark van just rolling down the road? "Hey kid. Do you like candy?" By the way, alpacas are cute (and are not llamas)...

Grand Archives - "Miniature Birds"

You can always count on Sub Pop for good music. Here's video #2 of theirs for the week.

Fleet Foxes - "White Winter Hymnal"

Although a little more than a week old, I figured, "Why not make it a trifecta of Sub Pop videos?" Here's one of the best opening lines to a song... not much of a video, though. It says, "Hey, our lives our better than yours. Have fun at the office, bitches."

Band of Horses - "No One's Gonna Love You"

This Week in Video: Bike To Work Day Edition

Who would have thought that it would be raining on Bike to Work Day? Probably the same people that predicted it would rain on Sunday. Let's not get all huffy and start complaining on how sucky the rain and Nissan Pavilion/Live Nation are and how awesome yet awful Radiohead is. Just be glad that those of you who missed the show might have another chance (in the armpit of America).

"Ladies love the feel of the wheel." Get me a mustache, roller skates and rapist sunglasses STAT!

Flight of the Conchords - "Ladies of the World"

I'm amazed that MMJ played one of my favorite songs off of Evil Urges on SNL. Oh, by the way, TRS has Evil Urges, due out 6/10. Jealous?

My Morning Jacket - "I'm Amazed" on SNL

Listen, just because I like DCFC, doesn't make me less of a Rockist. Jerks. This is my guilty pleasure. This song kinda sucks, though. Sorry.

Death Cab for Cutie - "I Will Possess Your Heart" on The Late Show with David Letterman

This Week in Video: The First Saturday in May Edition

This week was a great one for late night talk shows. Let's go through the week.

Although I never watch it (I hate Scots), The Late Late Show has some pretty good acts (second video excluded). Go to RnR on 6/15.

Grand Archives - "Torn Blue Foam Couch"

Check out this nervous, back room lounge singer... I mean Morrissey. WTF is with the AI shirt? I can't imagine they are going to have a Morrissey week; especially not after Neal Diamond.

Morrissey - "Irish Blood, English Heart"

First R.E.M., then John Legend and now this? Lovely.

Feist - "I Feel It All"

This Week in Video: Arbor Day Edition

Time to resurrect an old favorite. (Let's not kid ourselves, this is a way for me to mail it in...)

Did you know Tane Mahuta loosly translated means retro furry porn? Me neither...

The Ruby Suns - "Tane Mahuta"

For you all who missed last night's SSLYBY show (and the fights outside caused by Tom Morello fans), here's a tasty morsel. F-ing girls, man.

Someone Still Love You Boris Yeltsin - "Think I Wanna Die"

Who walked away from Kyoto? I want to know his name, GD it! (See how I didn't curse there? Yeah, this is a family show.) Oh, and join the Rockists at the concert event of the year on May 11.

Radiohead - "House of Cards" on Conan

When I was in elementary school listening to R.E.M., I could never decipher the lyrics. (Turns out they were pretty much just gibberish anyway. "I wore my doormat face"? Wtf?) Now, this is no longer a problem.

R.E.M. - "Hollowman"

Indie as F***: Part 3?

I can't remember how many times we've posted commercials and I bet you don't care.

It's been a good night. After spending 1 hour getting home from work (which is a 13 block trip), I sat down with my 4 best friends: Bombay Sapphire, one of Anna's cupcakes, and a DVR of the latest Rob & Big. I forgot to fast forward through the first of what seemed like 8 commercial breaks when I was sobered up by a, well, sobering sound.

See for yourself.*

PurePare? Damn, even condiments are cool.

*Don't mind the VH1 stuff. I could only find it one place on the intertubes.

Conan O'Brien w/The Max Weinberg 7: "Blue Moon of Kentucky"

This one's for you GH. We're keeping Honest Abe, though.

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

We told you to watch out for them.

So, the Gummys came out today. And, to no surprise of us, Rockists favorite The XYZ Affair made a showing placing 26th in the Best Video category, above many indie-rock powerhouses like Ted Leo, THS, Menomena, Spoon and The New Pornographers. Congrats to them. We'll show it again for good measure.

The XYZ Affair - "All My Friends"

Stay tuned for info on their big tour coming up next year.

This Week in Video: Two for Wednesday Edition

On the same theme as GHC's post earlier, Ween was just in Baltimore. Unfortunately, all us Rockists were in our respective home towns for the holiday. I've uncovered some pretty good video of the show online. This should be a PSA.

Ween - "Don't Shit Where You Eat"

And for numero dos (although not from the show).

Ween - "Even If You Don't"

Indie's favorite lo-fi punk band just came out with a new video. There's some fantastic green screen timing. You can't help but want to be involved in the shoot.

The Thermals - "Returning to the Fold"

Here's the first video from The Body The Blood The Machine. I can learn keys, Hutch! I wanna be in the band.

The Thermals - "A Pillar of Salt"

Following the breakup of our favorite band (take a guess), GHC followed the drummer to Pernice Brothers, who were the entertainment for the first TRS listening party. In memory of that day, here are two videos from Live a Little.

Pernice Brothers - "PCH One"

If only I had this balance... sober.

Pernice Brothers - "Somerville"

Update: This Week in Video: Return of This Week in Video Edition

Welcome back.

Vampire Weekend just released their first ever video, "Mansard Roof." Listening to these self proclaimed specialists in "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", "Upper West Side Soweto", "Campus", and "Oxford Comma Riddim" reminds me of summering at the Water Gap.

Vampire Weekend - "Mansard Roof"

Although this video is old, I'm sure you've heard the song recently. I've never wanted to make out with a phone so badly.

Cansei De Ser Sexy - "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex"

One of the best shows of the fall. Well, other than Illinois... they annoyed the piss out of me.

Menomena - "Evil Bee"

If you have 10 minutes to spare, check this one out. Then head to 9:30 on Sunday to catch BSS play Kevin Drew's stuff.

Broken Social Scene (KD) - "It's All Gonna Break"
Metro Chicago - 11.03.2007

Update: I can't believe I missed this one.

This Week in Video: More Like This Summer in Video

Yeah, so it's been a while. I seem to be leading off every post with a version of this...

This guy likes putting old movies to music.

The Twilight Sad - "That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy"

Since we're on a foreign band theme...

Shout Out Louds - "Tonight I Have To Leave It"

If any of you know us, you know we worship The Bigger Lovers. Since they haven't been a band in almost 2 years, you can probably guess that this is old, but f-in a, this song is in my top 3 of all time...

The Bigger Lovers - "Bought Your Ghost"

This Week in Video

I realize it's been a while since the last video post (well, we have been slacking on all aspects of the blog, our apologies). I know most of you were wondering how to go on. Wonder no more.

Sometimes you feel like the upper right and sometimes you feel like the lower left. This video from Blue States will make you think twice about the consequences of that last sip of coffee. Oh, and ladies, keep an eye on the upper right for a special treat.
Blue States - "Allies"

Ahhh crap. I just realized The Comas played last night at DC9 even though it was advertised here. I guess I'll have to rely on AOL to give me my fill. There's nothing like satisfaction though online corporations.

The Comas - "Red Microphones"

My latest obsession, The Twilight Sad, has not left my playlist in over a week. It's like listening to The National crossed with Interpol crossed with a kilt. The Rockists are planning on checking them out at Sonar on 7/17. Be sure to check out their other music below the video.

The Twilight Sad - "And She Would Darken The Memory"

The Twilight Sad - "Walking For Two Hours"
The Twilight Sad - "Mapped By What Surrounded Them"

This Week in Video: Not Out in Stores Edition

After my 3 week stint in the Dirty Jerz (and before another half week up there) I finally have time to scour the web for the best videos... or just some average ones.

TRS has had the new Wilco album, Sky Blue Sky, for over a month thanks to a brother and friend of the Rockists. I'm a big fan, even though it's a departure from their good old days. It's just a record of songs by a band. Here's a trailer of the new album and DVD. (The Rockist Society doesn't receive any advertisement money because of you watching this... we're poor)

Watching this video brings me back to college when I first heard of The Books. Normally bands like this don't make it on TRS, but The Lemon of Pink was extremely influential in... uh... nevermind. It's great to be alive.

"Take Time"

Again, 2 of the Rockists saw an amazing show. The National opened up for Arcade Fire at DAR on Friday. I wasn't fortunate enough to get a ticket... thanks... no, it's ok... really... I'll be fine... It's a good thing The National is coming back to DC this summer.

"Mistaken For Strangers"

This Week in Video: Crazy Weekend for 2 of TRS Edition

As you will hear from G.H., these next few days will be pretty intense... unfortunately, this Rockist will only partake in The XYZ Affair. Because I was pulled out of town, I will do a tribute to the shows I have (will) missed (miss).

Last night was David Vandervelde with Richard Swift and Page France at Le Chat Noir. Judging by the stories of G.H. and G.L.'s hangovers, I'm assuming it was a pretty good show.

"Murder In Michigan"

Saturday is the big one. The Oranges Band will play with front man Roman Kuebler's ex-band, Spoon at Sonar in our neighbor to the NE. The show is sold out. I had tickets. Damn you lead based paint!

Spoon - "I Turn My Camera On"

The Oranges Band - "OK Apartment"

Sunday night our friends The XYZ Affair are playing the Rock and Roll Hotel. I'll be at that show.

Monday, however, is a different story. The Whigs will be rocking NE without me in attendance. I'm not too sure if the balance of the Rockists will make it, either. After 4 shows in 5 days, they may be a little tuckered out. C'mon, give 'em your support... or at least buy them a Sparks.

"Right Hand On My Heart"

This Week in Video

It's a shame that one of the Rockists doesn't enjoy Radiohead. I doubt this will win him over, though. A note from Thom:
This is what happens when you spend too long listening to the same thing over and over again until you just cant tell anymore and you have to do something else instead

courtesay ov those genius bruvers vapour

Thom

"A Wee Treap Doon Memori Lane"

As you may have heard, I was a little torn up by Field Music canceling their DC show last month. Apparently they did it so they could play on a BBC2 TV show... with Tom & Jaf... without Andy (wtf?)... and into the credits. They canceled two shows for this? That's lamer than Vonnegut's takes on the universal human condition. Too soon? (ed. note: may he rest in peace.)

"Tones of Town"

Wait, I didn't know this song was new. Apparently Yep Roc thinks it is. Just kidding, Yeppie. We still love you.

The Minus 5
"Aw Shit Man!"

This Week in Video: Updated

Finally, a new Apples in Stereo video. I'm sick of watching Robert Schneider's appearance on the Colbert Report 3 times a day. Wait, no I'm not.
"Can You Feel It?"

It's Feist, so it has to be good. Well, Feist with Broken Social Scene is better, but this is the next best thing. If this song is any indication, the new album should be pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.
"Sealion Woman"

David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) is coming to town. Great. He's playing with that dude from The Postal Service and Death Cab. Meh. Tickets are sold out. Balls. I guess it's better that way. I wouldn't want to be surrounded by a bunch of teenie boppers while trying to compensate for starting to listen to PtL after they were broken up. This video is from earlier in the millennium.
"Nothing"

TRS is going to the Lucero show tonight at The Black Cat. Y'all should come. This is from their show on Tuesday in Chapel Hill. Get ready to rock. (Yep, I know, lame. What are you gonna do?)
"Sing Me No Hymns"

Update: Speaking of ladies who moonlight with BSS, Metric (Emily Haines) released a web version of "Empty" off of Live It Out this week. 2/3 of TRS went to the Metric show at 930 last year. It was quite fantastic.
"Empty (Last Gang)"

This Week in Video

The National
"Start a War"

R.E.M. has been my favorite band since the 4th grade. Since TRS didn't do anything for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction, I figure this is the next best thing. The quality is crappy, but what do you expect? This video is only 2 years younger than the eldest Rockist.
"Moral Kiosk"

The band with the longest name ever is also the best band from Springfield, MO. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is turning into a TRS staple.
"What'll We Do"

The Hold Steady came out with the second video to Boys and Girls in America this week. G.H. wanted me to mention how this video is the perfect distillation of rockist ideals, but I wanted to mention that I don't quite care for this video.

"Stuck Between Stations"

This Week in Video: SXSW Edition

New York punk funkers The Rapture blew into La Zona Rosa yesterday, playing on the same stage as Peter Bjorn and John and The Pipettes. The video and sound quality isn't that good, but the music gets my head nodding faster than a rattlesnake on a whiskey jar.

"Get Myself Into It"

Native boys Ghostland Observatory play, well... I have no idea where they played this yesterday. I also have no idea what the song title is. It sounds good, though, dontcha think? Go to their myspace page and check out "SAD SAD CITY." But before you do that, check out the guy to the left of the camera...

unknown title

More to come tomorrow...
