The Rockist Society Officially Loves RnR Hotel, June

This June kinda rules. First off, Euro 2008 starts tomorrow, which for the uninitiated is like the World Cup, but a total upgrade since it's only European squads (translation: no crappy Asian and Central American teams ruining things). And then, since this is a music blog, there are a lot of pretty badass, Rockist-approved shows, all of which are taking place at the Rock and Roll Hotel. If only the RnR Hotel weren't so annoying to get to and if their drinks were cheaper, it'd probably be our fave venue. They serve Sparks, after all. Without further ado, this is where you can find me when I'm not at Lucky Bar:

Sunday, June 15: The Grand Archives. Pretty melodic rock, a bit on the softer side. Share similar influences as The Pernice Brothers. Frontman is former Carissa's Wierd/Band of Horses guitarist, Mat Brooke.

Wednesday, June 18: Superb double bill with Centro-matic and The M's. Really excited about this one, as any self-respecting Rockist would be. I've seen Centromatic open up for Drive-By Truckers, so it'll be cool to see them stretch out a bit more as the headliner. Haven't heard The M's new album yet, but if it's half as good as the retro-y and glammy Future Women, then we're in for a treat.

Wednesday, June 25: This might be the show I'm most excited about. Times New Viking bring their brand of, um, shitgaze (I swear I didn't make that up) to the Hotel and it'll be a sweaty affair, I'm sure. Put your Schlitz (Schlitzes?) in the fridge now.

I don't even have TIME to tell you all the weird connections I have to The Grand Archives. My party days in Seattle have brought me face to face with way too many of these dudes. And Matt Brooke owns my favorite bar in Seattle. the Redwood...although when I was there last, they had replaced their fantasticly old jukebox and nixed the free, endless barrel of peanuts available. Sellouts. Anyway, I'd like to go along to that show. I'm pissed about the peanuts.

So you think the European Championships are an upgrade from the World Cup? Yes, there aren't any shitty Asian teams, but thereare some excellent South American and African ones. Those countries usually produce more exciting soccer than say, Austria.

That being said, I am glad that the Rockists are soccer fans. I for one, am looking forward to watching Italy v Netherlands this afternoon.

You forgot crappy North American teams, like, ahem, us.

You see Sneijder's goal? Klokwork Oranje, baby.

yeah, i hear ya. austria is clearly outclassed, but i'd argue that the euro group is typically better top to bottom than that of the world cup. and sneijder's goal was absurd. total football, indeed.

I first saw Centro-Matic years ago at Common Grounds in Arlington. I think they were on tour with Shearwater. Great show.

I keep hearing chatter about The M's. Now that they have the official endorsement of The Rockists I'll give their new album a listen.

Leave it to Jumboslice to ruin a perfectly good soccer discussion by mentioning some obscure band he saw at Common Grounds.

BTW, they had the same discussion on ESPN2 today (World Cup v. European Championships), however I am not sure what the consensus was. I still disagree that Euro is superior. France and Italy both looked like crap yesterday.

I don't necessarily prefer Euro to the World Cup, but the proximity of the countries, generally close matches, and the wide open field (this year, particularly) have me a little more excited than I was about Germany 06, for example.

And plus, we dont have to watch the US play.
